Walter Schenkman
Walter Schenkman, born in 1924, received his early musical training from his oldest brother, Irvin Schenkman (who concertized in Italy during the '60s and '70s).
Following service in the US Army during World War II, he completed his formal education with a B. A. from Harvard College, a Master of Music degree from Yale School of Music, and a Doctorate in Music from Indiana University.
Musical studies further included a year's study at the Paris Conservatory (Lazarre Levy). He joined the faculty of the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley as a Professor of Music in 1956 and also served as Chairman of the Piano Department during a portion of his tenure there. He appeared frequently in recital -- solo as well as chamber, and with orchestra -- while at UNC. A prolific contributor to musical journals, his articles gained national recognition (ASCAP Deems Taylor Award 1975) and earned him a Distinguished Scholar Award from his University in 1981.
Retiring from the University in 1984, Schenkman continued his performance activities with a series of different presentations across Colorado. The complete cycle of the Beethoven Piano Sonatas was presented in Greeley's Civic Center Auditorium during the 1990-91 season. The pianist has also carried on a lifelong interest in language study: an interest awakend in early years and likewise guided by his brother, Irvin. Latin, German and Italian were a basic part of the daily routine along with piano. This linguistic interest was later expanded to include an undergraduate Major in Slavic Languages at Harvard, and more recently, the addition of Yiddish, Hebrew, and a smattering of Arabic. But at the present time, his attention is centered on the piano and on his recording project (begun in 2002) that now includes 9 releases and 10 full hour-and-a-quarter CDs.
