Extended description:
Our contemporary critic is unanimous in attributing to Fra' Giuliano da Spira the paternity of the "Ufficio ritmico di San Francesco"; it was probably a work ordered to him by the chiefs of the Franciscan Order. Some historians presume that the composition happened between 1231 and 1232 following the schema of "Vita prima" written by Tomaso da Celano.
This edition of the "Ufficio ritmico" has been cured from Father Eliseo Bruning o.f.m. as a bachelor relation for the "Pontificio Istituto Superiore di Musica Sacra" of Rome and published in 1926. For the musical reconstruction of this work Bruning used some important codes. Between the most reliable of them we remember the code "Rosenthal" - probably having Italian origins - conserved in the Franciscan convent of S. Anna in Monaco di Baviera and written in the years 1235-1240. The second important code is probably the "Latin Vatican" n.8737 which is dated at the half of thirteenth century. A third code of the second half of fourteenth century is the "Code of Assisi" conserved in the archives of Saint Rufino. It is substantially faithful copy of the quoted Rosenthal code, easily readable in "notazione beneventana".
