Frauenliebe und leben (A woman's life and love) is the third cycle of a narrative unit by Schumann. It dates back to 1840 and is a masterpiece that can take its piace proudly alongside Schubert's great works. The eight sets of lyrics by Chamisso teli of the love of a woman being crowned by marriage and motherhood, and finally cut short by the death of her companion. After singing seven "lieder", ali about the happiness of the female lead, from the delusion of being unloved to thè euphoria of reciprocai love, from the preparations for marriage to thè birth of a son, Schumann goes on to show a woman struck by the pain of separation. A piano postlude returns to thè dream theme that started the cycle, here looked at again over thè distance of memory, in an epilogue that is entirely instrumentai, highly originai, and powerfully moving.

A sort of composite mourning runs through the entire cycle, hinted at even in the happiest of twists, a melancholic reflection on death, that unavoidable destiny that make the temporary and fleeting drives of our existence, vain. In the end these drives only survive in the form of the comfort provided by memories.
The Korean musical tradition goes back a thousand years and follows a course that is completely independent in terms of both tone and notation, from that of Western musical culture. However, from the end of the nineteenth century, when business relations with Europe began, Korea quickly got to know and absorbed the cultured musical repertoire of German and Italy.
Korean sensitivity immediately showed signs of emotive affinity with and specific interest in vocal production, both in the German chamber music tradition (the "lied") and in opera.
Numerous composers emerged in Korea, due to a flourishing concert institution (the Seoul Opera House has 3000 seats), and teaching institutions (today there are dozens of Universities of Music in the capitai alone), along with a rapid spread of Protestantism. These composers included Nan-Pa Hong (1898-1941), a violinist and composer, writer of thè historical La Balsamina lied, a piece that cost him prison and torture, since the text included a metaphorical reference to the promotion of resis-tance to Japanese domination. Its melodie vein is characterised by its linearity and simplicity, elements that Nan-Pa Hong intentionally used to spread his music among the more populous strata of Korean society at a time when foreign power had systematically attempted to strip the peninsula they had invaded of any cultural identity. Du-Nam Jo (1912-1960) was also important. This prolific composer often used a pleasing combination of the western form and the syncopated rhythms of thè Korean tradition. Others worthy of mention include Su-Hyun Kum (1919-1992), Jae-Myung Hyun (1902-1960), Tae-Jun Park (1900-1986), Dae-Hyun Kim (1917-1985), Young-Ha Yun (1922-1965), and Sun-Ae Kim. The latter, born in 1920, was the pioneering woman on the musical scene, whose works include a lyric opera about an amorous event taken from Korean mythology.
The "Lieder" are among of the most abundant and interesting of the significant works produced by these musicians. These songs for singing and piano clearly hark back to the Romantic and late western Romantic era (also found in their melodrama), with an easy, limpid melodiousness, which is intertwined with harmonic veins that are typically oriental.
Their musical poetry is generally nostalgie and intimate, and frequently amorous. To the western world these are originai "lieder of the rising sun", that are strongly eloquent emotively and marked by a pleasant melancholic thread, the expression of a people under domination by foreign powers for thè first half of the twentieth century. The Korean people were later deeply divided following the "war of the 15th June", which gave rise to thè two Koreas.
Putting two "Lieder" repertoires together, composed at opposite ends of the world but linked in that they share the same themes, is an intriguing undertaking that attracts both those who love and follow the cultured western repertoire and those who are interested in listening to originai music from other cultures - the ideai meeting point for East and West.

음악 극장 설립 ( 좌석이 약 3000석가량되는 서울의 예술의 전당), 음악 교육 ( 오늘날 열개가 넘는 수도권 내 음악대학), 개신교 문화, 그리고 많은 한국 작곡가들의 출현이 빠른 음악 전파의 역할을 했다.

작곡가이면서 바이얼린 주자,소설가, 독립 운동가이기도 한 홍 난파는 당시 일본의 속국이였던 한국의 비운을 비유한 "봉숭아(한국 최초의 가곡)" 를 작곡해 그때문에 왜경에게 붙들리어 고문을 받기도 했는데 왜냐면 일본이 침략한 한반도의 정체성을 제거하는 데 정책적으로 방해가 되었기 때문이다.그의 음악적 영감인 선과 단순함은 음악을 한국인에게 보다 쉽게 보급하려는 그의 바램이 엿보인다.
작곡가 조 두남 (1912-1984) 또한 중요하다.
그는 한국적 가락과 서양 작곡 형식의 혼합으로 아름다운 가락의 가곡을 탄생 시켰다.
