Extended description:
The Goldberg Variations
The Aria that serves as basis for the Variations begins and ends the work. In between the two statements of the Aria there are 30 Variations. The Variations include a series of canons in every third Variation (a first voice “leader” is imitated by a second voice “follower”). Other highlights include a “French Overture” that marks a new beginning at the halfway markof the 16th Variation; Variations 13 and 25 are occasionally referred to as the crown jewels of the entire set for their exceptional beauty, while the final Variation 30 is a free-for-all “song fest” that presents two Street songs in various combinations. The text of the one: “I’ve not been with you for so long, come closer, closer;” the other: “Beets and cabbage drove me off; had my mother cooked meat, I might have stayed longer.”
