The huge Hammerklavier sonata takes all of 50 minutes in performance time. From the very first, a series of massive chord (in the opening Allegro movement) announce the serious nature of the work at hand. A brief moment of respite occurs with the light humor of the second Scherzo movement; but for the rest, the emphasis is on seriousness of pur pose and grandeur of effect. The Adagio (con molto sentimento) features intense concentration and sublime beauties, and is likewise a movement of unparalleled lenght among Beethoven’s works for the piano (all of 18 minutes’ worth!). The brilliant fugue that follows (generally considered one of the most difficult in all of the piano literature) forgoes the sense of unity cultivated in a typical Bach fugue, but rather exploits every conceivable transformation of the initial fugal subject (inversion, retrograde motion, augmentation, etc.), to bring the work to a rousing conclusion.
Sudden changes of mood and tempo – with a back-and-forth between Vivace and Adagio – are reflected in the free-flowing, improvisatory lines that open the Sonata in E, Opus 109. The listener is rudely awakened from this world of dreams by abrupt sweep of the powerful Prestissimo movement that follows next. The succeeding movement – 'ruminations' (or variations) over a simple songlike theme – ends on a note of deep reflection (or might it be resignation?) with a simple restatemene of the original theme.
