Sudden changes of mood and tempo – with a back-and-forth between Vivace and Adagio – are reflected in the free-flowing, improvisatory lines that open the Sonata in E, Opus 109. The listener is rudely awakened from this world of dreams by abrupt sweep of the powerful Prestissimo movement that follows next. The succeeding movement – “ruminations” (or variations) over a simple songlike theme – ends on a note of deep reflection (or might it be resignation?) with a simple restatemene of the original theme.
