In order to celebrate the bicentennial of Franz Liszt’s birth (1811-1886), we have selected some of his works freely inspired by Italian art and culture. Most of them are taken from his Années de Pèlerinage (books 2 and 3), but we have also inclu- ded some peculiar pieces, such as Alla Cappella Sistina, an amazing work that mixes Antonio Allegri’s Miserere and Mozart’s Ave Verum into a highly emotional and dramatic musical fresco.
This brief and diverse collection is a testament to Liszt’s multifaceted personality and talent. His versatility allowed him to effortlessly express the intimate lyricism of Petrarca’s sonets, the spectacular virtuosity of Rigoletto Paraphrase, the clearly orchestral feel of Legend no. 2, or the formal freedom of Dante Sonata.
All these pieces, however, draw from the immense wealth of piano virtuosity effects, which almost transcend the mere sound material. That’s how Liszt sublimated and condensed the different transformation techniques of the musical material he worked on, whether of his own inspiration or not, thus renovating the very concept of cyclical variation in a very personal way.
